Corrosive Drywall

What it does

After installation in your home, the high sulfur content in the natural gypsum reacts with the warm, humid Florida air to create Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S). You may have heard of this before in chemistry class…it’s also the evil part of “acid rain”. Well, this hydrogen sulfide in your house loves metals like copper and silver…the very same metals with which we love to make plumbing and electrical components. Besides smelling like rotten eggs, and stinking-up the house, the H2S attacks and corrodes copper plumbing, A/C cooling coils, electrical wiring, contacts in switches, fuses, DVD player circuit boards, home computers, even speeding up the tarnishing on Grandmother’s antique silver picture frame, but the worst effects can go beyond the financial hit on your pocket book…it could be putting your health in jeopardy. Reports that exposure to lower concentrations can result in eye irritation, a sore throat and cough, nausea, shortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs are quite common. These effects are believed to be due to the fact that hydrogen sulfide combines with alkali present in moist surface tissues to form sodium sulfide, a caustic. These symptoms usually go away in a few weeks; however, long-term, low-level exposure may result in fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, irritability, poor memory, and dizziness. And that’s just low-level concentrations!
